Generic Job Description:

The public works director has primary responsibility for the organization, operation and overall performance of the public works department.  Department functions include management of solid and vegetative waste, maintenance of streets and public property, stormwater control, as well as public works construction projects.  The public works director must be an effective administrator, business minded, and be productivity and service oriented.  The director must lead by example with impeccable personal character traits and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education Requirements

  • Preferred Education is an accredited four (4) year college degree in public or business administration.
  • Minimum education high school or GED equivalent diploma accompanied by demonstrated management capabilities with progressively responsible experience in the areas of business or public works administration.

The public works department has an annual operating budget of $2.5 million.  It has 25 full-time employees.  The public works director is appointed by the Board of Mayor and Selectmen, and reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Additional Requirements:           Candidates must undergo a pre-employment physical and drug screen.  This position occasionally requires the availability of the employee to work during bad weather or unusual conditions during all hours of the day and night, as well as on weekends.  This position requires a valid Mississippi driver’s license.  Appointment to this class is subject to a one year probationary period under provisions of the current City of West Point Personnel Policy.

Class B or C Water Treatment Plant Operator

The City of West Point, MS announces the following position vacancy

 

Class B or C Water Treatment Plant Operator

 

The minimum requirements and qualifications of this position are as follows:

 

Minimum Requirements:

Class B Waterworks License or successful passage of Class C water treatment test and working on experience under certified water treatment and or distribution system to achieve eventual Class B certification

Must be at least 25 years of age

Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver License

 

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED, plus four (4) years of experience working in water distribution and/or water treatment for Class B position.  Must possess physical ability to perform activities required for daily operations and maintenance of the water treatment plant and water distribution system; must have ability to read, understand, and follow oral and/or written instructions.  A working knowledge of CPR and first aid is helpful.

 

Additional Requirements:

This position requires employee availability for regular shift work, as well as when required during holidays and weekends.  A successful candidate must complete a pre-employment Physical & Drug Screen.

Class III or IV Wastewater Operator

Job Description

 

Job Title:                   Class III or IV Wastewater Operator, West Point Water System (WPWS)

 

Responsible To:         Chief of Operations/General Manager

 

Supervise Directly:   Employees of the wastewater system and other assigned employees or coordinate third party contract performance

 

Job Summary:           Responsible for planning, organization, operations, and maintenance of wastewater collection and treatment system

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Follow or recommend goals and objectives for wastewater operations
  2. Work with supervisors/foremen in providing work plans and procedures
  3. Develop leadership in subordinates
  4. Analyze operating procedures and offer advice and counsel. Provide budget and analysis of fiscal status
  5. Work with consultants, federal, state, county, and city officials
  6. Stay current on rules, regulations, and laws applying to municipalities to include employment statutes and purchase law
  7. Confer with supervisors on quality improvement
  8. Work with contractors, builders, and customers in provision of quality service
  9. Promote goodwill and work to enhance the image of WP water department
  10. Support the development of safety programs and employee application of sound safety principles
  11. Foster professional development for employees
  12. Work closely with other City of West Point Department Managers to promote interdepartmental corporation
  13. Perform other duties as requested by the Chief of Operations or General Manager
  14. Must have and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s license
  15. Must be able to manage/operate all wastewater systems in the absence of the Chief Wastewater Operator
